Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee is an English computer scientist who invented the World Wide Web. Berners-Lee enabled a system to be able to view web pages (hypertext documents) through the internet. He also serves as a director for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) which overseas standards for the internet and World Wide Web. Berners-Lee has also been concerned about issues relating to freedom of information and censorship on the internet.
Born in London England. To parents Conway Berners Lee and Mary Lee Woods.
Went to Emanual School London from 1969 to 1973
1973 to 1976 graduated at the Queens College, Oxford university England where he recieved 1st class degree in physics
1978, Tim worked at D.G. Nash Limited where he wrote typesetting software.
Tim got a contract job as a software consultant in a company called CERN. He created the idea of sharing ideas quickly by a system called Enquire (this is similar to the world wide web).
Started in a new job called John Pooles image computer systems. This gave him experience in computer networking.
He went back to work at CERN with a permanent persition.
Tim saw that he could join a company called CERN which is the largest internet node in Europe.
Tim Berners Lee and Robert Cailliau made changes to his original thoughts and ideas and created a software that enabled anyone to get information from the computer they were using this is the design of the World Wide Web. This was the first browser.
“Info.cern.ch” was the address of the world’s first-ever web site and web server, running on a NeXT computer at CERN. This was launched on 6 August 1991. It explained the World Wide Web concept and gave users an introduction to getting started with their own websites.
In 1992 there were over 50 web servers in the world.
By summer 1993 the first website was getting 10 thousand hits a day.
In 1994, Berners-Lee founded W3C (World Wide Web consortium) at the Laboratory of Computer Science (LCS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. This is an organisation to try to improve the quality and standard of the world wide web.
“For services to the global development of the Internet”
He has received over 10 honorary doctorates, is a member of the Internet Hall of Fame, and was awarded the Finland Millennium Prize in 2004.
– A personal gift of the monarch limited to just 24 living recipients.
He is a founding Director of the Web Science Trust (WST) launched in 2009 to promote research and education in Web Science, the multidisciplinary study of humanity connected by technology. Berners-Lee is also a Director of the World Wide Web Foundation, launched in 2009 to coordinate efforts to further the potential of the Web to benefit humanity.
